bhai dicot root vs monocot root, how to remember xylem bundle count, pith and all the differences?

Bhai ye chapter mere liye "Anatomy" kam, "Antim sanskar" zyada lag raha hai 😭. Fir bhi try kar raha hoon.

Jo main samjha: root me epidermis (with unicellular root hairs), phir cortex, endodermis, pericycle, vascular bundles, aur pith. Sunflower root (dicot) aur maize root (monocot) ke diagrams NCERT me hai. Dono me xylem aur phloem alag alag patches me hain, alternate, radial arrangement.

Doubts:

  1. Dicot root me xylem bundles kitne hote hain aur monocot me kitne? NCERT me "tetrarch", "polyarch" likha hai, ye kya hota hai?
  2. Pith dono me same hai kya? Mujhe lag raha tha dono me bada hota hai.
  3. Secondary growth kis me hota hai aur kahan se start hota hai, kyunki root me vascular cambium toh alag se dikhta nahi.
  4. Endodermis me wo Casparian strips ka kya scene hai?

Mock me ek question ayaa tha "Which is NOT a feature of monocot root?" aur me confuse ho gaya. Please simple explain karo.

Let me do the counting thing with a mnemonic. The ending "-arch" is the number of xylem bundles: di (2), tri (3), tetra (4), penta (5), poly (many). Dicot root generally has two to four xylem bundles (diarch to tetrarch). Sunflower root in the NCERT diagram is the dicot example. Monocot root has more than six (polyarch), the maize one is usually many. Mnemonic: "Dicot = Few, Monocot = Many (poly)".

"Dicot root = few xylem, my attendance = few too" okay I'll stop. Pooja's mnemonic is solid though

Pith: dicot root has small or inconspicuous pith, sometimes none. Monocot root has a large and well developed pith. You said both big, that's the trap. In the mock question the options probably included "pith is small" as a monocot feature, which is wrong. Other mono features: polyarch xylem, no secondary growth, large pith.

Casparian strips are bands of suberin on the radial and tangential walls of endodermal cells. Water has to pass through the cell (not between cells) there, so the plant gets control over what goes in towards the xylem. Endodermis is a single layer of barrel-shaped cells without intercellular spaces.

ohh mere se pith wala galat tha. Thanks rahul bhai, ab pata chala mock me kaise galat hua. Dicot = chhota pith, monocot = bada pith. Pakka yaad.

Bas yahi chhoti chhoti cheezein hi marks hain. Keep going.

Secondary growth in a dicot root: the tissue between xylem and phloem bundles is called conjunctive tissue (parenchyma). Some of the conjunctive cells become meristematic and form a cambium strip below the phloem. Then the pericycle cells opposite the protoxylem also become meristematic and form the rest, and altogether a complete ring of vascular cambium forms. It then cuts secondary xylem inward and secondary phloem outward, like in the stem. Monocot roots don't have this, so no secondary growth.

Also pericycle is also the layer from where lateral roots arise. Often asked.

Table for the exam hall, hope this helps:

    Dicot rootMonocot root
Xylem bundles2 to 4 (di- to tetrarch)more than 6 (polyarch)
    Pithsmall or absentlarge, well developed
    Secondary growthyesno
    Xylem typeexarchexarch
    Arrangementradialradial

Xylem in roots is exarch in both (protoxylem towards the periphery) which is a different thing from the stem, where it's endarch.
