🧬 NEET Biology❓ Question

Genetic vs species vs ecological diversity: the NCERT examples all feel the same to me, how do I classify?

In a chapter test I wrote "50,000 strains of rice in India" under species diversity and lost the mark. Since then I don't trust my classification.

NCERT's three levels are genetic, species and ecological diversity. The examples given:

  • Rauwolfia vomitoria in the Himalayan ranges showing variation in the potency and concentration of the active chemical (reserpine)
  • India having a huge number of genetically different strains of rice and varieties of mango
  • Western Ghats having more amphibian species than the Eastern Ghats
  • India having a greater variety of ecosystems (deserts, rain forests, mangroves, coral reefs, wetlands, estuaries, alpine meadows) than a country like Norway

Where I am lost: rice is one species, right, so how is that "diversity"? And is ecological diversity the variety of habitats or the variety of species in a habitat? Also, how many examples will NEET actually make us match? I want a trick that works on assertion-reason questions too, not only matching.

Ask yourself what is changing while the unit stays fixed. If the unit is one species and the variation is inside it (different alleles, strains, varieties, chemical potency) that is genetic diversity. If you count different species in a region, species diversity. If the thing varying is the whole habitat or ecosystem, that's ecological diversity.

Rice is one species (Oryza sativa), but the strains differ genetically, hence genetic. Your answer was not wrong in spirit, just wrong in the bucket.

the Ghats one is ecological, I'm sure. Western Ghats and Eastern Ghats are two different kinds of landscapes, so it compares ecosystems. That's what I wrote in the test and got it right?? I think. Not sure now 😬

Pooja, the test answer you wrote might have been right for another reason, but the example itself is about species counted, the number of amphibian species in the Western Ghats compared with the Eastern Ghats. Counting species of a group = species diversity. The ecological one in NCERT is the India versus Norway comparison, where they list the types of ecosystems. NCERT also says that India has just 2.4% of the world's land area but about 8.1% of its species, which is why it is a megadiverse country, though that's a separate fact.

mnemonic from my notes!!! G-S-E: Gene, Species, Ecosystem.

    • G: "same species, different versions" (rice, mango, Rauwolfia)
    • S: "different species, count them" (amphibians in the Ghats)
    • E: "different places, count the places" (India versus Norway)

Three examples, three levels, one each. If an assertion-reason says "genetic diversity means variety of species", the reason is wrong because you only need to check that word "species" vs "same species".

G-S-E, saved. And I now see why Rauwolfia counts as genetic: same species, different potency of reserpine in different places. Thanks everyone!

About your habitat question: ecological diversity is the variety of ecosystems (habitats/communities), at the biggest scale, in a region. It's not "how many species in one pond", that's species richness. My amma gave me an easy way: India has a desert, mangrove, coral reef and snow mountain, so ecological diversity is high. Norway doesn't have mangrove or desert. Easy to picture.
