I only game on weekends now and honestly I enjoy it more

A kitchen timer, a sister with no mercy, and one boring rule that fixed my sleep and my squad nights.

Okay so this is embarrassing but I'm putting it here because maybe someone in the same hole will read it.

Last summer I was playing around 5 to 6 hours a day. Not exaggerating. Wake up, check the squad, "just one match", and suddenly it's 4 pm and mummy is standing at the door with that look. When school started I thought I'd just play less automatically. Lol. No. I'd sit down for an hour of physics and my brain would go "bro your sensitivity settings are still off" and I'd be back on the phone by 9.

The breaking point wasn't dramatic. It was a Tuesday unit test where I got 11/25 in a chapter I actually liked. Not because I didn't know the stuff but because I'd played till 2 am the night before and my brain was soup. I read one relative velocity question three times and the words just slid off the page.

What I tried first (and why it failed)

  • Deleting the game. Lasted 2 days. Reinstalled "just to check my friends list".
  • "Only one hour a day". This one is sneaky bad. One hour is never one hour in a ranked game, matches don't end when you want them to, and I'd spend my whole study session waiting for my gaming hour. The game was living in my head rent free.
  • Giving the phone to mom. Worked for four days till I needed it for a class group. Then it was back.

The weekend thing

What finally worked was a really boring rule: no gaming Monday to Friday. Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon are mine. That's it. No negotiation, no "just ten minutes because I finished early".

I think it works because it removes the daily decision. Every weekday night I used to fight myself: should I, shouldn't I. Now the answer is already printed. On weekdays the game doesn't exist, the same way I don't ask myself whether I should go to school on a Sunday.

Here's my actual setup:

ThingWhat I do
WeekdaysGame logged out, app limit set, password changed by my sister (she has no mercy)
Saturday6 pm to 9 pm, squad night
Sunday1 pm to 4 pm, then nothing, because the evening is revision for Monday
TimerA kitchen timer, not the phone. When it rings I finish the current match and that's it
Missed a dayIt does not carry over. No "I'll play double next week"

The kitchen timer sounds silly but phone timers just become another notification I swipe away. A loud tin timer on my desk is hard to ignore, mostly because my dadi asks "why is it ringing" and I have to explain.

The part nobody tells you: it's more fun

I assumed weekend only would feel like punishment. It's the opposite. When I play three hours after waiting five days, every match matters. I've been watching clips, thinking about positions while walking to the bus stop, and I actually want it. Before, gaming was background noise. I did it because my hand was already holding the phone. Now it's an event, like a match day.

My squad was annoyed first. Two of them still play on weeknights and my rank slid a bit, I won't lie. For the first month I felt like I was falling behind. Then I noticed my aim wasn't worse and my game sense was honestly better. Turns out grinding on autopilot at 1 am teaches you nothing.

What I do on weekday nights instead

Not studying 24/7, that would be a lie. Roughly:

  1. Homework plus the one thing my plan says for that day.
  2. Cricket in the gully if there's daylight left (I'm bad, but loud).
  3. One YouTube video, max, about game design or a match review. Yes it's gaming-adjacent. I allow it because it doesn't pull me into a four-hour hole.
  4. Sleep before midnight. This alone fixed so much. My chemistry marks went up and I didn't even study more, I was just awake.

Where I still slip

Last month there was a friends' tournament on a Wednesday and I broke the rule. Got about 90 minutes in, felt terrible after, and then I did something that helped: I didn't spiral. I just went back to the rule on Thursday. The old me would have said "streak broken, might as well play all week". The rule only works if one slip doesn't mean collapse.

Exam weeks the weekend slot gets cancelled completely and the squad knows. I send one message, "exams, back in 2 weeks", and done. It hurts less than I thought.

If you want to try it

  • Pick your window before you feel like playing. Not in the moment.
  • Make the weekday game properly inconvenient (log out, new password you don't know, or uninstall).
  • Use a timer you can't dismiss with a thumb.
  • Tell your squad so they stop pinging you every night.
  • Expect the first two weeks to be awful. After that it gets weirdly peaceful.

I'm not saying gaming is bad. It got me through the weirdness of class 10 online. I just want it to be a part of my life and not the whole thing. Weekends it is. Okay, going to go be annoying about this to my squad now.

the "just one hour" trap!! omg yes. i do the same with k-dramas, one episode is never one episode ๐Ÿ˜ญ your table is so clear tho, i might steal the "doesn't carry over" rule

    • [+]Rohan Sharma11thSampleยท 9d agoAuthor

steal it, it's the most important line. the second you allow carry-over you're basically negotiating with yourself and you always win the negotiation

your sister has no mercy and your dadi is the alarm monitor. bro your house is basically a prison with better snacks

      a very effective prison. 10/10

Good rule. Decision removal is what works. Willpower is a bad system. I stopped fighting myself in the same way. Fixed slots, no debate.

wait how does the sister thing work, does she actually know the password and you can't ask her? i tried this once but i just found where my brother wrote it down lol

she set it, I don't know it, and she only gives it on Saturday 6pm sharp. the one time I tried bribing her with a samosa she took the samosa AND said no. so yes it works

nice post. i have a very old phone so I never could play much, but I think the same thing works for me with YouTube. one video becomes ten. i will try the fixed time idea and use my mother's alarm clock. simple but good.

the sleep point is so underrated. when i started sleeping before 12 my panic attacks before tests reduced a lot. it's not magic but the brain really does behave differently. happy for you rohan

Drop year version of this: I deleted games for the whole year and kept one match a month as a "reward". Sounds extreme but I needed it. For you, a weekend window is a smarter, more sustainable setup. The fact that you restart after a slip is the real skill, honestly. Most people quit the whole system after one bad day.

the one-match-a-month thing is wild but I respect it. i did a hackathon-style version, "gaming is a prize for finishing a task list". worked until i started writing lazy task lists to win faster ๐Ÿ˜…
