NDA, CDS, TES: which defence entry is for a PCM student from a small town, and what does the life look like?

I'm in class 12, PCM, in Patna. Honestly, I'm not sure about engineering colleges because of money, and I've always liked the idea of the armed forces: the uniform, the discipline, and a steady life. My uncle's friend was in the army, and his stories about the early morning drills made me curious more than scared.

The problem: I don't know where to start, and many YouTube videos seem to want me to join a paid group. I have limited resources, so I don't want to waste money.

What I have understood so far (please correct me): there is something called NDA that you apply for after twelfth, and CDS that you apply for after a degree. I'm not sure about the rest. I also heard there is a way to get in through the JEE score (TES?). I've seen "SSB" mentioned everywhere but I don't know what it is.

My questions:

  1. Which entries are open to me right now as a PCM student in class 12?
  2. What is the SSB, and how is it different from the written exam?
  3. What does daily life in training look like, honestly, not the movie version?
  4. Is it okay if I'm not very tall or athletic? I run every morning, but I'm not a sports person.
  5. Any free, reliable places to prepare, not paid groups that promise a guaranteed selection?

I'm not asking for a promise, just a realistic picture.

My cousin is in the army, so I've heard a fair amount. Short version. NDA: after 12th, a written exam conducted by the government's public service commission, then a multi-day interview process (SSB). Army wing is open to any stream. Air Force and Navy wings need physics and maths in 12th. Your PCM is fine. Check the official notification each year, the age and eligibility rules are printed there. Don't trust anyone who promises selection.

No. NDA is after 12th. CDS is after graduation. Your cousin might be thinking of CDS.

On SSB: it's a selection process that goes on for several days, with psychological tests, group tasks, a personal interview and a medical check. They're not testing who is the fittest or smartest. They're looking at how you think, work with a team and handle pressure. People often say it's about "officer-like qualities", which sounds fancy but mostly means honesty, clarity, and being able to lead without bullying. The written exam gets you to the door; SSB decides who walks through.

thank you rahul bhai, that's the first time SSB made sense to me. "being able to lead without bullying", I'll remember that

About the JEE route: there's a technical entry scheme for PCM students where your JEE Main score is used to shortlist you for an SSB call. If selected, you go through officer training and a degree is part of it. I'm not sure about all the details and they change, so go to the official recruitment website and read the notification. Don't depend on my memory.

Honest note on fitness since I run: you don't need to be a sportsperson. You need basic fitness and the willingness to improve. Running every morning is a good base. Add pushups, pullups and stretching slowly, don't overdo it or you'll get an injury and lose weeks. The medical has strict standards for eyesight and height/weight, so check those on the official site early rather than discovering them at the last step.

Free resources: NCERT for physics and maths (you already have this), previous years' question papers on the official site, and free YouTube channels that explain topics. Avoid "guaranteed selection" groups. No private group can guarantee a selection.

Backup plan thought: since the selection can depend on many things, keep your 12th marks strong and also fill an engineering or degree form as a safety net. The defence route is a good plan A, but please keep a plan B, especially with the money constraint. It's not a lack of faith.

Daily life, from my cousin's stories: very early wake-up, physical training, drill, classes, sports, lights out on time. Little free time at first. He said the first months are the hardest, the hostel-like routine, and then it becomes your normal. He also said the friends you make there are for life.
